This relaxed form of footwear is actually the oldest form of shoe known to man, with evidence on cave paintings that prehistoric man wore their own version of them! More recently they have had resurgence but from very humble beginnings.
Many people consider Brazil to be the 'birthplace' of the modern-day Flip Flop. Here, they were easy to make from simple materials and the shoes of choice for the very poor, retailing for only few dollars in the slums and shanty towns. From these beginnings their popularity spread throughout the country until strong Brazilian brands such Havaianas and Ipanema emerged and now lead the way.
The Height of Fashion
With flip-flops now having reached mainstream fashion, most women admit to having at least one pair. For many women they are 'the shoe' of the summer season, with ladies buying them in a host of colours, finishes and heel heights so that they go with every outfit in their wardrobe. They also cater for every pocket, with prices ranging from a few pounds to over $250 for a pair of Gucci flip-flops! At the same time they have been known to come as a free gift in some magazine publications!
Are They Good for You?
With sales now overtaking the sports footwear market, it is important to assess what affect this footwear has on our feet and general health. Since they do not have fastenings or tight pointed uppers you would assume that they have fantastic foot-health benefits. Furthermore, brands such as Fit Flops and Sketchers Shape Ups are marketing their Flip Flops for their toning qualities to the legs.
With my experience as a footwear technologist for the past 10 years I'd follow a general rule when choosing your Flip Flops - the cheaper they are, the more damaging they are likely to be.
Research has shown that very flat, non-supportive versions made of poor, cheap materials do adversely affect feet, legs and back development in women especially when worn for prolonged periods of time.
Many cheap styles offer no support to the inner arch and heel and do not possess any shock absorbency. This is leading to foot problems for a growing number of people. The best advice if you already have 'problem feet' is to stick to good quality brands like Riders, Ipanemas and Fit Flops as these offer extra support and protection. Even if you don't have foot or leg problems, keep your wear of Flip Flops to just a few hours every day, rather than day-in-day-out, particularly when walking long distances.
Also regularly replace them to ensure that the soles do not get 'flattened' during wear which will reduce the amount of support they can offer.

The Canon HG10 camcorder is designed to be compatible with the AVCHD codec. It is based on the Canon HV20 but its design deviates substantially from the older model. The HG10 is much lighter than the HV20 and it has a slightly lower weight than its primary competitor, the Sony Handycam HDR-SR7.
The HG10 camcorder has a taller body than the SR7 and is therefore more comfortable to hold. However, the SR7 has a more fashionable and stylish appearance than the HG10. To achieve a thinner body, Canon relocated and changed the shapes of many of the controls. Some changes were for the better such as the eye-level viewfinder that is extendable and the rocker switch for zooming. However, the directional switch with concentric scroll wheel is a bit difficult to use. While it is better than utilizing a touch screen, manual focus and navigation are more difficult because there is a tendency to also move the scroll wheel when using the switch. Moreover, you will have to shoot by utilizing the LCD display more often.
The HG10 has a three-megapixel CMOS chip that captures images as 1,920 by 1,080 HD video that is interlaced and downconverted into the 1,440 by 1,080 resolution for AVCHD. It is provided with a 40-gigabyte hard drive that can contain from 15 hours of video at 5 Mbps to as low as 5.5 hours of video for 15 Mbps. Three-megapixel still photos are possible while the camcorder is in photo mode. Video grabs are also possible at the resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 while the device is in movie mode. It should be noted here that the photographs can only be saved on a MiniSD card and not on the hard drive.
The HG10 is capable of taking sharp photos and videos that are saturated and well-exposed. However, the microphone has no zoom capability and it has poor pickup of sounds.

Under the interior box flap we find the camera body, the lens and many parts and pieces for camera operation. The first thing I always do is dig out the battery and charger to get them plugged in and charging. Once that done it's time to unload the rest of the box.
Canon packs a USB cable and an AV cable with the EOS 60D camera. The USB cable is only slightly handy but the AV cable immediately goes into my camera bag. Today's cameras capture such huge files that downloading from camera to computer via USB just seems to take too long for me. I hardly ever have a camera to USB cable in my bag, but I always have a USB memory card reader. The AV cable is my favorite accessory. It is also the most overlooked bit of hardware by many photographers.
I always carry the AV cable so that I can review my images anywhere. No matter where you go odds are that there is a TV set nearby. With the AV cable I can always show off my images (and now movies) even if I don't have a laptop with me. And if the option presents itself wouldn't you prefer to view the day's images on an HDTV rather than on your puny little laptop monitor?
Next out is the camera body. The Canon EOS 60D is in an odd position in Canon's camera hierarchy. It replaced the older EOS 50D in some ways and in others it is a Rebel series camera on steroids. I was expecting to find that the body was plastic feeling and maybe even a little creaky like some of the Rebels have been. I was pleasantly surprised to find the body to be sturdy feeling in the hand and weighted just right for balance.
The Canon EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is also reassuringly heavy. I don't mean to imply that it weighs too much, it doesn't. But then it also feels much more substantial than the Rebels' 18-55mm kit lens and not just by weight but considering fit and finish too. I would put it on par with the former 28-135mm kit lens of the old 50D. However the 18mm wide angle length is much more appropriate for a digital SLR than the 28mm length of the former lens.
Before mounting the lens I attach the neck strap. Having a neck strap on the camera is as important as seat belts to a car. A neck strap can mean the difference between a full-fledged drop and a mere ding on the lens.
The battery is still charging so now is a good time to install the Canon software. In particular I have found that 'Digital Photo Professional, 'PhotoStitch' and the 'Picture Styles Editor' are the programs to install on my computer.
It has taken almost two hours but the battery is fully charged and it's time to start getting used to the new camera. In all I think the Canon EOS 60D presents itself well from box to full use. The components in the box are generally useful with little fluff and nothing missing. But here it is worth mentioning that the regular EOS 60D outfits do not come with an HDMI cable, only this special kit does. Get the mini-HDMI to HDMI cable the same day you purchase the camera. You are going to want it!
